What is an ABS SA1 (Statistical Area Level 1) in Property Research?

An SA1 (Statistical Area Level 1) is the second-smallest geographic building block in the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) used by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) to release Census data. Most urban SA1 blocks contain between 200 and 800 residents (roughly 80 to 250 dwellings), making them 20 to 50 times more granular than a whole suburb. Ripehouse Advisory maps every Australian street address via G-NAF to its SA1 block to compute the Ripehouse Street Score.

Postcode / LGA Resolution (~25,000+ Dwellings)25

Blends multiple distinct suburbs and demographics together

Formula / Rule: ABS ASGS Micro-Area (~200–800 Residents / 1–4 Residential Blocks)

How G-NAF, Mesh Blocks, and SA1s connect on every Street Score page

When you look up a street on ripehouseadvisory.com.au/streets, you will see a provenance line such as “42 addresses across 2 census blocks.” Our warehouse matches every individual house number on that street in the Geocoded National Address File (G-NAF) to its 2021 ABS Mesh Block, rolls those up into their parent SA1 blocks, and calculates an address-weighted score across the exact blocks that street runs through.
